Communication nº 12

Rome, 13 July 2009

Today, with the morning prayer, the Province of Europe invited us to discover the will of God.

The journey has been one of listening and acceptance of the mission of the Company, especially for three sisters who have been entrusted with a particular task.

Mª Jesús Velasco, starting with Constitution XI and the recommendations of the XV General Chapter has shared the lived process of her process as Administrator General. The sharing consisted of complete and detailed information of which has helped us good much deeper than reading mere numbers…we have been made cognizant of the fact that finances concern not only our personal, but our universal responsibility, as well.

After the presentation, the Capitulars elected three persons who will comprise a commission which will study the General Government accounts, and make recommendations. These sisters are: Mª Eugenia Arroyave, Dominique Perouse y Margarita Zubizarreta.

In the afternoon, Josefina Caviedes, the General Secretary, gave us an account of her service during these past six years: a history of the objectives to which she has attempted to respond, and the activities which she undertook. Josefina stated:  through each document, I have seen the face of the person who has sent it; this has helped me continue my work with a greater sense of mission. She affirmed that this service has permitted and obliged her to create positive relationships within, and outside of, the Company.

Manuela Urra, General Archivist, has also shared what her mission has meant to her. She said it has been beautiful to be able to continue the work that Pilar Foz y Foz begun and to see the great effort that was put into it. She insisted that we make every effort to  keep a journal of each community, and in this way, build, together, the history of the Company.

The last session of the day was initiated with a mime who, after a reading of Article VII, Rule 2, marked the days that the Chapter had traveled already, on a calendar. She then invited us to “take everything to heart” all that we have lived, motivating us to enter into the discernment for the elections of the General Government. Following the mime, Ernestine Velarde, Vicar General, explained the process we were to follow for the elections.

The day was closed with a prayer entitled, “I Search for You, Lord, in All Things”, by Didier Rimaud, S.J., which brought together all that we had experienced during the day:”

“It is you, my God, whom I seek,
In all that which you have lovingly created,
In all that we experience,
In that through all of this, you come to us”

This day will also be remembered by the news of the deaths of Mercedes González Pagliery’s brother; Mercedes lives in the community here in Rome, and of Montserrat Massó’s father. Monse is the provincial of Europe and also a Chapter participant. We have accompanied them in these difficult moments and shared their pain and that of their families.
